Nestle Infant Nutrition

Creating Shared Value

You may have noticed throughout the year that caring corporations in the area have developed truly extraordinary relationships with FSMC. Take, for instance, Nestle Infant Nutrition of Florham Park, whose management team has established Creating Shared Value, an employee volunteering initiative that encourages Nestle employees to get involved in the community and stay involved for several years. Nestle selected FSMC as its premier agency and established four areas in which to focus: (1) FSMC Madison Day Care Center, (2) FSMC Adult Day Centers, (3) FSMC Young Professionals Bowl-A-Thon, and (4) “Hope for the Holidays.” According to FSMC Volunteer Coordinator Marie Palumbo, “each area has two co-chairs that organize the volunteer teams and they have taken a leadership role in planning and executing programs, with exceptional results.” This fall, volunteers from Nestle came into the FSMC Madison Day Care Center to talk with children and their parents about nutrition and made some tasty, healthy treats together. You cannot talk about nutrition without exercise, so Nestle went above and beyond donating four tricycles, helmets and hula-hoops! Seniors at the FSMC Adult Day Centers and Nestle volunteers had a blast at a Harvest Festival Lunch this fall, complete with games and special prizes. Nestle’s young professionals made a great showing at the Bowl-A-Thon, which raised a total of nearly $33,000, and now the company is preparing for a Thanksgiving food drive and planning to help out families in need this holiday season. If food is love, Nestle Infant Nutrition has certainly given much of both to FSMC families!

Families in Morris County have depended on Family Service of Morris County (FSMC) for help during difficult times for nearly 200 years. But who does FSMC turn to for its own support? Local foundations have stepped forward to provide much needed funding for critical social services that serve both the oldest and youngest in our community. The Grotta Fund’s one year $60,000 grant is expected to benefit more than 35 seniors who cannot be helped by the current case management system and who have multiple challenges, ranging from homelessness, substance abuse and mental illness, seniors with dementia, physical disabilities, and extreme poverty.  According to Renie Carniol, Director of the Grotta Fund for Senior Care of the Jewish Community Foundation, “We awarded this grant to help vulnerable seniors through case management and a powerful collaboration among mental health and physical health agencies and services. Led by a well respected agency, it offers a plan for oversight and sustainability through its Advisory Committee members.  It can become a model for other counties in the State dealing with the increasing population of seniors.”

Merck Helps Preschoolers Get Off to a Great Start:

(Directors of area Child Care Centers and FSMC staff receive training in the Devereux Early Childhood Assessment model which assists early childhood mental health professionals to provide a strength-based approach to children displaying challenging behavior in school and/or home settings.)

Merck Company Foundation, through its New Jersey Neighbor of Choice Grant Program, awarded $50,000 to support the FSMC Early Childhood Mental Health Intervention Program. NJ NOC Grants Program provides philanthropic support for local non-profit initiatives that are consistent with Merck’s strategic priorities of interest and that identify and implement projects/activities that address critical community and quality of life issues. In recent years, there has been a growing concern in our child care centers that increasing numbers of very young children are manifesting behavior problems that have implications for their future success in school. This grant will support the emotional heath of our youngest children and their families through a continuum of comprehensive, services that focus on prevention and intervention for at risk children in selective, publicly subsidized child care centers in Morris County.

Golden Bagel Runners Share the Wealth with FSMC Military Families:

FSMC is pleased to be a recipient of proceeds from the Golden Bagel Run (14th annual "GBR") organized by FSMC Board of Managers member Hector Mislavsky and his wife Judy.  According to Hector, “You already know the story....For the sixth consecutive year we asked our friends who participate in the GBR to donate whatever they can/want. This year Judy and I matched donations $3 to $1.  We managed to raise $1500 from our friends, including many who were unable to participate but donated in any event. With our match, the total pool was $6000.”   The funds raised went to various charities, with FSMC receiving $2,500 for the Military Families Program.
